Saving electricity

The biggest electricity consumers in an average household are statistically large televisions including game consoles and computers including peripherals (15%), followed by large household appliances such as washing machines, dryers and refrigerators (13%). Do you already know the biggest electricity consumers in your household?

But as with water consumption, you should also keep an eye on indirect consumption when it comes to electricity consumption. Through our consumption, we also cause a lot of electricity consumption abroad and also in regions of the world where little consideration is given to our resources in the production of electricity.

Airing instead of washing

In general, don´t wash clothes more often than necessary - sometimes it´s enough to air the clothes.

This also extends the durability and you can enjoy the garment for longer.

Avoid peak times

Avoid using your (high-consumption) devices between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m.

Even if you don´t have an hourly electricity tariff, you can support the optimal use of the electricity grid and ultimately help preventing outages.

Charge only when necessary

If you have an electric toothbrush with a charging station, only put the toothbrush on the station about once a week.

Only a conventional toothbrush consumes less electricity.

Clean filters

Clean or replace the filters of your ventilation regularly as dirty filters makes your ventilation use more energy to run.

Depending on the season

In addition to the energy consumption at home, each of us is of course also indirectly responsible for a lot of other energy consumption. But reducing this is sometimes not that difficult.

With a seasonal diet, you can significantly reduce your footprint associated with the production of the food (e.g. if greenhouses do not need to be heated or cooled).

Discover the savings

Even if it makes sense to simply take a look at each electrical consumer and check the power consumption, there are a few candidates where it is really worthwhile.

The following devices usually offer the greatest potential: fridge, water heater/boiler, tumble dryer, television, stand-by devices, chargers, dishwasher, washing machine, freezer, lighting

Do it yourself

You can also produce your own electricity in a rented apartment.

The keyword is «plug-in EEG systems» and you can use it to operate a system with up to 600VA - even in an apartment building. You can find more information on «plug-in EEG systems» with the following keywords: pluggable PV systems, mini PV, balcony PV, balcony power plant, guerrilla PV, plug and play PV and many more...

Eco preferred

Prefer the eco-friendly modes of the washing machine and dishwasher.

Efficiency Class

With electrical appliances, it is worth looking at the energy efficiency class. A class A+ refrigerator uses almost twice as much electricity as a class A+++.

Efficient vacuuming

Parquet, laminate, tiles? With hard floors, the dirt is on the surface and your vacuum cleaner can do that with ease even at low levels! Only carpets need a little more power.

Electricity? Eco of course!

The solution for sustainable electricity consumption with good feelings is green electricity.

These tariffs are often even cheaper than the standard tariff of your local energy supplier.

Elevator or stairs?

If you want to reduce not only your direct electricity costs, but also your footprint in terms of energy consumption in general, then you can also take a look at the elevators.

It is not about carrying the water boxes up the stairs to the 4th floor, or walking up to the friends living on the 12th floor, but you might be able to walk some routes better.

In addition to the electricity you save, your body also consumes roughly 0.1 calories with each stair step (down still half) and your cardiovascular system is trained.

Just switch off properly...

...the PC monitor when you make lunch and your TV when you go to bed - «standby» costs electricity and cash. With socket strips that can be switched off, you can turn off all connected devices with a single push of a button.

With this you can save up to 100€ and 220kg CO2 (with about 5 devices with 10W stand-by power each).

Use LIVISI SmartHome and a smart plug and switch the devices on/off via scenarios.

Know the wasters

If you know which devices consume the most electricity in your home, you can reduce or optimize their use.

The largest consumers are statistically large televisions including game consoles and computers with their peripherals (15%) followed by large household appliances such as washing machines, dryers and refrigerators (13%)

Less light is good

Limit the number of lights used in a room to those that are really needed.

Even if the additional lights are sometimes intended to help make things cozier or to illuminate dark corners, they still consume electricity. Think carefully about whether you really need all the lamps.

Use our scenario «Turn lights on when motion is detected» and turn on the light only when needed.

Motion detected light

Outside lights, hallway, basement etc. are areas with short and occasionally presence only - use a motion detector to limit the lighting of those areas to a minimum.

Use our scenario «Turn lights on when motion is detected» and control the lights by motion.

No charging, not in socket

Plugged-in chargers consume electricity even if they are not charging, as electricity is still flowing in the power supply unit.

So unplug the charger when you´re done charging. Same for all other power adapters that are not in use.

No routing at night

If you do not have any devices that depend on an active internet connection at night, then you can switch off your internet router at night.

Please note that many SmartHome systems (like LIVISI SmartHome) carry out maintenance & cleanup tasks at night, or check for updates - so watch the network traffic a few nights before you take action.

A router that consumes around 14W and which is switched off from 1:00-8:00am saves around 35kWh/year.

Use LIVISI SmartHome with a smart plug and use the scenario «Time controlled light» to store the schedule directly on the smart plug.

Reduce the brightness

Reduce the screen brightness of your computer to save power. Also check your television, since many televisions are also set very brightly.

Reduce the brightness and save power.

Stand-bye bye

Even if your TV «feels» off it still consumes electricity in standby mode.

The TV with additional device like Blueray-player, PlayStation or receiver can sum up to 60W. Socket strips with an master-switch will help you saving energy.

Use LIVISI SmartHome and a smart plug and switch the devices on/off via scenarios.

Turn off unnecessary lights

Turn off lights that are not in use or that are not needed.

Especially in the dark season one tends to turn on many lights, which unfortunately are also superfluous. Light gives us security and also conveys warmth or security.

Lights in less frequented areas (corridors, entrance areas, garages, basements, etc.) can be controlled very well using motion detectors and can therefore be switched on and off as needed.

Use our scenario «Turn lights on when motion is detected» and turn on the light only when needed.

TV in the dark

Modern televisions adjust their brightness to the ambient light. If the room is very bright, the TV also consumes more electricity.

The difference of a dark room compared to a sunny room can be 100W and more for a modern 52" TV.

Create a scenario in LIVISI SmartHome that closes the roller shutter as soon as the TV smart plug is switched on.

Use natural light

Use natural light/daylight whenever its possible - its free and does not cause emissions.

Use solar power

Shift the use of your (high-consumption) devices to times when there is a lot of electricity in the grid.

Even if you don´t have an hourly electricity tariff, you can support the optimal use of the electricity grid and ultimately help preventing outages.

Winter lights

In the dark season we need light. Illuminating the windows with stars or stairs and decorating the house with fairy lights and other lighting is simply part of it.

However, the lighting does not have to be on all night: If you limit it to the time between sunset and sunrise and leave it out completely between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., you can easily save 50% of the electricity.

Use LIVISI SmartHome with smart plugs and your own scenario. In the scenario, switch the plugs on at sunrise and 06:00 and off again at 23:00 and at sunrise.
