Save Heating Costs

68% of the energy consumption in private households is used for heating - there is enormous potential for savings in heating. Reducing the temperature by just 1°C can save up to 6% of energy.

But not only the reduction of the room temperature has a big impact on your energy consumption for heating, but also the hot water supply and hot water consumption. In any case, it's worth taking a closer look.

All sealed?

Make sure the window & door seals are in good order and there are no drafts. Drafts are not only inefficient for heating, but can also promote the formation of mold due to the penetrating moisture.

You can easily test the sealing of windows/doors by moistening your hand and slowly moving it along the edge of the window. If you don't feel a cold draft, everything is tight.

Body-heating

Each person heats up a room with about 120W.

Stay together in one room and use your body heat to reduce heating costs.

Ceiling fan

A ceiling fan could help to bring the warm air down to your place and has a similar effect like 4°C reduction of room temperature.

Close the doors

Keep the warm/cool air in the room and don´t let it escape through open doors.

It also makes sense to keep the cracks under the doors sealed, but it must be noted here that these could also have a function: in ventilation systems, the air between the rooms with supply air and exhaust air must be able to flow freely and gas boilers in bathrooms often need supply air via the bathroom door.

With door/window contacts (WDS) on critical doors, you can be informed about open door scenarios. For example, let a lamp flash orange as a hint.

Clothes make the heat

Warm clothing reduces your body´s heat loss by about 17%.

So dress warmly and turn down the heater.

Efficient heat-pump

If you own an air-air or air-water heat pump try to use it mostly during the day.

During daytime outside temperatures are higher, and you´ll get a better efficiency.

Frostbite?

Do you often freeze in bed? Then don´t turn your bedroom into a sauna, but use a cherry pit pillow or a hot water bottle instead of the heater.

Heat recovery

Try to use ventilation with heat recovery instead of simple fan to vent your bathrooms/toilets.

This can recover 70-90% of wasted heat through ventilation by having 60 seconds inlet air, and 60 seconds exhaust air (during this time the ceramic heat exchanger is ""heated"")

Keep it inside

Use shutters/curtains for better isolation.

A closed shutter can prevent up to 35% lost on thermal insulated glazing and up to 80% on double glazing.

With LIVISI SmartHome, the roller shutters can be controlled accordingly via scenarios.

Let the air flow

Radiators should not be clogged or covered so that the air can circulate well.

Even if some radiators are really ugly and spoil up the room, free air circulation is absolutely necessary for effective heating and radiators shouldn't be hidden.

In order for the air to be warmed up efficiently, it has to move - this usually happens due to the contrast between cold surfaces (e.g. windows) and the warm radiators.

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance

  • If it gurgles, then vent radiators! (up to 15% reduction)
  • Have the heating system serviced 1x/year (such as hydraulic balancing, pump)
  • Reduce flow temperature (up to 20% savings)
  • Dismantling thermal bridges (e.g. roller shutter boxes, heating niches)
  • Insulate pipes (up to 8% reduction)

No direct downdraft

Bed headboards, tapestries or even extra walls behind the sofa help to feel warmer by not being directly exposed to the cool downdraft that occurs on cold walls.

No fossil-heated water

Use modern, electric water heater instead of gas-based water heating.

With this you not only save expensive and fossil gas, but you can also adjust your hot water consumption to your own electricity generation with PV and save a lot of money.

Not in use, no heating

Heat rooms when needed only. Switch-off the heating while nobody is at home, at night or if rooms are not used for a longer period.

Reduce the heat

Reduce the temperture inside your house by 1-2°C.

Only 1°C reduction of temperature can save up to 6% of energy.

Ventilate if ist warm

Avoid ventilation during the coldest hours of the day (usually in the early morning hours) - ventilate in the warmer afternoon instead.

Ventilation done right

Shock- & transverse ventilation wherever its possible. Avoid tilted windows!

If you have fixed times for ventilation, make sure that the heating turns off approx. 30 minutes before you start ventilation.

Use our scenario «Open window, reduce temperatures» and stop heating the outside on ventilation.
If you ventilate at fixed times, you can use the scenario «Time-controlled heating» to let the temperature drop 30 minutes before airing.

Warm carpets

Warm feet, warm person! Sometimes the room is sufficiently warm, but a cold floor gives a feeling of cold.

Use carpets to have it warmer (perception +2°C) without turning up the heater.

Waste (no) heat

Rooms with devices that produce waste heat (stove/stove, big LED TV) should be heated less.

Many devices emit a lot of heat and if you use these devices regularly, the temperature in the room can generally be set a few degrees cooler.
