Water & Appliances

Of course, saving energy is not just about the heating, the kitchen and electricity consumption, but also about using resources such as our drinking water efficiently.

When it comes to water, for example, it's not just about paying attention to direct consumption in your own household. Through our behavior we are also responsible for a lot of water consumption in industry and abroad.

Cold as default

Some sinks usually don´t need warm water.

Set the single-lever mixer to «cold» when you turn off the water.

Better yet, turn off the hot water supply at the sink.

Cool water heater

Set the water heater directly to the temperature you use for washing your hands - this saves a lot of energy.

Don´t let water flow

50% of the time in the shower/at the sink, the water runs directly to the drain.

Close the valve while brushing your teeth, shaving, soaping, shampooing the hair.

Dry lawn

You should only water your lawn when it is absolutely dry and when there is a risk of drying out.

The lawn forms deeper roots if it is watered less frequently and more intensively - this also makes it more resistant to drought.

Economy shower head/flow limiter.

A water-saving shower head or flow limiter reduces water consumption to 7 liters instead of 14 liters per minute.

Warm water also costs energy and you save up to 30% heating energy.

Full is better

Do not run your appliances until they are full (washing machine, dishwasher, dryer, etc.).

With around 280 flushes/year, this can mean savings of up to 100kWh if every second flush is saved.

Hands-off!

If you have to wash dishes more frequently or a lot, then the dishwasher is more efficient than washing by hand and uses less electricity and less water.

No double rinsing

The hot or cold rinsing of dishes before using the dishwasher uses additional energy and water. If the dishes are heavily soiled, you can save energy and water with a higher program in the dishwasher.

Put it on the Rack

Even the most energy-efficient dryer still needs electricity. Your drying rack not!

The rack save you 100% energy directly.

Rainwater for the plants

Collect the rainwater in a bin to later use it to water the plants. This is actually very good for the plants.

Seasonal and regional

When buying groceries, make sure to give preference to regional and seasonal products. In this way you reduce the water risks associated with production and support our farmers.

For the following, non-regional products with a particularly bad water footprint, you should at least pay attention to sustainable cultivation: coffee, cocoa, oilseeds, meat.

Shop more consciously

Nobody has to give up their piece of meat, but you should think about it.

Meat and animal products have a high footprint compared to a plant-based diet. The cultivation of fodder is particularly important here.

One kilogram of beef hides 15,500 liters of virtual water when kept intensively. The fewer animal products that end up on the dining table, the smaller the water and carbon footprint.

Shorter & less hot showers

25-40% of the hot water consumption in buildings is caused by showering.

Taking a shorter and less hot shower can save 15 percent.

Create a scenario which, for example, blink the light as a reminder 5 minutes after you have pressed a switch (e.g. wall-mounted transmitter WSC).

Shower instead of full bath

On average, you only use 50l when showering compared to 120l when bathing.

A shower instead of a full bath saves almost 60% water and energy.

Use cold water sensibly

Depending on the type of hot water preparation, it may take some time before hot water comes out of the tap.

Use this cold water to water flowers or fill the coffee machine.

Alternatively, you can fill it in the kettle to use it later.

Wash fruits and vegetables in a bowl

You should wash fruit and vegetables in a bowl instead of under running water to save water. You can then use the slightly dirty water for watering flowers afterwards.

Wash hands with cold water

Soap does not need warm water to do its job.

With 2l per hand wash you save about 1l of hot water each time.

Water-tank

It is best to equip your plant beds with a water reservoir that ensures that you do not have to water them every day.

One look at the display tells you whether the plants need water or not.
